Before and After Formaldehyde Readings Can Look Convincing: Most of the Meters Producing Them Are Wrong

A measurement institute in Shanghai once tested forty-one handheld formaldehyde meters sold online. Not one of them produced an accurate reading. That matters well beyond the gadget market, because the same category of device is often what sits behind the “before and after” numbers a homeowner gets handed at the end of a treatment.

Why the Reading You’re Shown Doesn’t Always Mean What It Looks Like

Consumer-grade formaldehyde sensors suffer from something called cross-sensitivity. They react to a wide range of gases that aren’t formaldehyde at all. An orange peeled nearby, cut flowers in the room, even peanut butter, have all been reported to trigger a reading on these devices. A number on a screen feels objective, but if the sensor behind it can’t tell formaldehyde apart from fruit, that number isn’t telling anyone very much.

What a Legitimate Formaldehyde Removal Service Actually Tests With

A properly run formaldehyde removal service doesn’t rely on a single device pulled out of a van. The reference point in Singapore is SS554, the indoor air quality code of practice that sets the 0.08 parts-per-million threshold most providers quote. Reputable operators test before treatment to establish a genuine baseline, treat the surfaces actually releasing the gas, then re-test roughly a week later under the same conditions, so the comparison is between two readings taken the same way rather than one good number and one convenient one.

Some providers go further and send air samples to an independent lab rather than relying only on a handheld unit, precisely because that step removes the cross-sensitivity problem from the equation entirely.

Questions Worth Asking Before Booking a Formaldehyde Removal Company

1. What device or method produces the “before” reading, and is it the same method used for the “after” reading?

2. Is a written test report provided, with the readings and the date of each test, rather than just a verbal number?

3. How long after treatment does the re-test happen, and under what conditions?

4. What happens if the follow-up reading still comes back above 0.08 ppm?

Why No Formaldehyde Removal Company Can Promise It’s Gone for Good

Even a careful formaldehyde removal company working with accurate equipment can only treat what’s emitting at the time of the visit. Formaldehyde breakdown from some pressed-wood materials can take years to finish releasing, and new furniture or a neighbour’s renovation can introduce fresh sources afterwards. A provider promising an instant, permanent fix is usually the one worth being more cautious about, not less.

This is also why a single glowing before-and-after figure, on its own, is a thinner piece of evidence than it looks. A home that reads well a week after treatment can still see levels creep back up months later once new pieces of furniture or a fresh coat of adhesive-backed wallpaper enter the picture. The number only ever describes that one moment, under those specific conditions, with whatever device happened to produce it.

None of this means a treatment isn’t worth doing. It means the paperwork behind it, specifically what the readings were measured with, how closely the two tests match in method, and whether a follow-up visit is included if levels climb again, is worth as much attention as the readings themselves. A company confident in its own process usually hands over that paperwork without needing to be asked twice.

Keeping a copy of the written report also matters for a more practical reason. If a home is sold or rented out within a few years, a dated test report with a named method behind it is far more useful to the next occupant than a verbal assurance that “it was handled already.” It also gives the next cleaning or renovation team something concrete and specific to compare against later, rather than starting over from scratch on a problem that may only be partly resolved.

Ask about the testing method before the treatment, not after. Contact Doctor Clean to find out what a proper before-and-after test actually involves.
